(Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Surfside) |
The craft beer scene in Myrtle Beach has grown leaps and bounds in the past 2-3 years. The "Pop the Cap" initiative in 2007 raised the ABV limit to 18% - opening the flood gates of good beer. If you haven't been here in a couple of years, it has changed for the better!
There are no restrictions on ABV for grocery stores in SC (besides state ABV limit of 18% ABV). You will find some semblance of craft beer in most if not all grocery stores.
If you are looking for a resort or hotel that serves craft beer on premises, try Seamonkeys Tiki Bar at Peppertree Ocean Club in Cherry Grove.
A word about getting around Myrtle Beach for first-timers: Bring a GPS. The numbered streets in Myrtle and North Myrtle are confusing to those who don't live here year-round.
South End - Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Surfside
Pawleys Wine & Spirits - 10135 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island. [map](843) 237-8106 - by far the best place to go when you're staying this far down on the Grand Strand. Go see Lee for great selection and great prices. They keep a nice selection of belgian bombers in the back fridge. They also have monthly beer tastings and carry the gift packages with glassware.
Quigley's Pint and Plate (brewpub) - 257 Willbrook Blvd., Pawleys Island. [map] (843) 237-7010 - Great food, pretty decent brew pub. Josh Quigley, who used to brew with New South Brewing of Myrtle Beach, branched off and opened this brewpub in Pawleys Island. The food is really, really good. They fill growlers, and if you go by on Wednesdays, they fill growlers for $5 or $6 (not including price of grower). They usually keep a brown ale, a red ale, a fruited-wheat beer and a lager on tap. Their seasonals include the Swampfox IPA, a nice Oktoberfest and an Irish Stout around St. Paddy's Day. Definitely get the pretzels. Their happy hour consists of super cheap delicious appetizers and $2 pints.
Surf Beverage - 3140 Hwy. 17 Business, Murrells Inlet. [map] (843) 357-7873 - this is the sister store to Pawleys Wine and Spirits. While they don't have as good a selection as Pawleys Wine does, they still have enough of a selection to get you going out the door with something good. Mostly six-packs with a few cold bombers. UPDATE - Surf Beverage now has a GROWLER STATION!
Myrtle Beach
Piggly Wiggly Market Common - 1220 Moser Dr., Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 839-0805 - Very simply the best beer selection in this area. You'd have to travel to Wilmington, Columbia or Charleston to see more beers in one store. The one-of-a-kind growler station is worth the trip. Bring your own growler or pay $6 for one of their's. They usually have a pretty great selection of beers on draft. In the past they've had kegs of Ballast Point Sculpin, Stone's Double Bastard, Founder's Backwoods Bastard, Foothill's Sexual Chocolate and Avery's DuganA IPA. Great bomber selection as well as plenty of American and imported craft beer.
Green's Beverage - 2850 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 448-1623 - Before the "Pop the Cap" initiative there were no good beer stores in Myrtle Beach. My first trips to Green's in the early 2000's were less than favorable. So much so that initially I didn't review Green's for this site. However, the Green's at Piney Grove in Columbia, SC is probably my favorite beer store in the state, so I decided it was time to check the local Green's out again. I'm glad I did. They have a pretty decent selection of bottles now. I picked up some Brew Dog and Terrapin Oatmeal Coffee Imperial Stout that I haven't seen anywhere else in town. If you are staying in Myrtle proper and have limited transportation, this should work for you.
Beach Discount Beverage - 2204 North Kings Highway. [map] (843) 916-9542 - They have an assortment of beers from Full Sail, Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada and Rogue. Prices on Rogue and DFH bombers is quite reasonable. They now have a growler station! It's centrally located to the resorts near downtown Myrtle Beach. They've been getting some great beers on their growler station lately - go check them out!
Bumstead's Pub (bar) - 400 Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach [map] (843) 445-6592 - A very cool surprise in Downtown Myrtle Beach near the old Pavillion. Connected to Dagwood's Deli with their incredible sandwiches, Bumstead's is a british/irish-inspired pub with great wooden booths and bar, old collectible beer cans and bottles. They have one of the best bottle selections in town. Even though we were in there at about 4PM on a Saturday, it was full and continued to get even more of a crowd. Very fun setting, I'd like to see this place around midnight on a Saturday.
Handleys Pub & Grub (bar) - 3873 Renee Drive, Myrtle Beach (Carolina Forest). [map] (843) 903-4908 - A fun hangout with a great british-inspired menu. Lots of TVs playing sports, a pool table and a great outdoor seating area with accompanying cornhole court. Decent bottled beer selection including some Stone, Rogue, Flying Dog, Sam Smith and some belgian brews. They run weekly specials, including one where they had Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout bottles for $1.
Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant (brewpub) - 3060 Howard Avenue (Market Commons), Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 839-0249 - Solid beers with some great seasonals. A bit pricey, even at Happy Hour, but worth the trip. Their Czech Pilsner and their schwartzbier are very good. Good food, but their service is spotty.
T-Bonz Gill & Grill (restaurant) - 1169 Seaboard St., Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 946-7111 - They have some New South Beers on draft. Pending review.
Liberty Steakhouse and Brewery - 1321 Celebrity Circle, Broadway at the Beach, Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 626-4677 - Brews on premises some nice beers. Recently released a Double IPA. Brewmaster Mike Silvernale is an awesome guy who is taking the brewery in new directions. If you haven't tried Liberty lately, go check them out!
Liberty Taproom & Grill - 7651 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 839-4677 - Serves a nice selection of local and national craft beers.
The Mellow Mushroom - 1571 21st Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC. [map] (843) 444-1122 - Great pizza, subs, appetizers and a great draft beer selection. Their bar is usually full, even in the winter. Their keg lines are always clean and every time I'm there they are finishing a keg and replacing it with something wonderful. No smoking allowed. Kid friendly restaurant. Bartenders are generally beer-knowledgeable.
Stool Pigeons - 1318 Celebrity Circle, Myrtle Beach. Broadway at the Beach. [map] (843) 444-8277 - Under new management that is doing a much better job at carrying craft beers. New review pending.
For What It's Worth - 7710 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 497-5000 - This is a great locals spot across the street from Liberty Taproom. With an ever-growing selection of craft beers and great food, FWIW is a must-hit spot. We enjoyed the fresh pints of the Belgian IPA from Mt. Pleasant's Westbrook Brewing Co. for most of the evening. Beer selection includes beers from: Bell's, Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada, Stone, Abita, Southern Star, Chimay, Avery, Left Hand, Oskar Blues, New Belgium, Highland, Bohemian, Rogue, Victory and Great Divide. Watch the game or play some ping-pong downstairs and venture upstairs for a game of pool. Or step out onto the balcony to breathe in the night air. A friendly, relaxed but hip crowd. They feature live music most nights. They continue to get some of the best beer selections in the area.
North End - North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove, Little River
International Cafe - 221 North Main Street, North Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 281-2325 - A great hangout in walking distance to the beach, several hotels and lots of Shag clubs. They have a large bottled beer selection and GREAT prices. One of the owner's is a beer guy, so he tries to keep some variety coming in the door. One of the few bars I've seen that has Samiclaus on the menu. DFH 90 Minute on tap.
T-Bonz Gill & Grill (restaurant) - 4732 Hwy. 17 South, North Myrtle Beach, Barefoot Landing. [map] (843) 272-7111 - T-Bones and Liberty are all owned by the same company and they use New South beers. They have some really great beers and you can't get any more local than New South.
Pavillion Beverage - 1301 Highway 17 South, North Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 272-4844 - In a pinch, this store will do. No beer-knowledgeable staff. Some bombers, but mostly six-packs. Usually seem to have at least one or two good beers to take home.
Bully's at Barefoot Landing - 4868 Highway 17 South, Barefoot Landing, North Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 272-4123 (bar) - Fun atmosphere, decent bar food. Pretty decent tap selection. It gets pretty fun in here late-night. Go on their deck and feed the massive carp and the turtles.
Seamonkeys Tiki Bar at Peppertree Ocean Club - 908 North Ocean Boulevard, North Myrtle Beach. [map] (843) 249-1421 - In the Cherry Grove area, just south of Seamountain Highway and Ocean Drive across from the Tilghman Golf and Beach Club Towers. Open from Easter to Labor Day (approximately). Want to drink awesome beer while chilling oceanfront? There aren't too many spots to do it, but Seamonkeys has great food, great views and great beers. Kevin will often have beers that he's not telling you about on his menu. Last summer, he had Ballast Point Sculpin and Coton by The Bruery behind the counter. Other beers on the menu include beers from Lagunitas, New Belgium, Dogfish Head, Terrapin, New South, Oskar Blues and Unibroue. There were some epic tastings at Seamonkeys the past few summers. A great place to meet up with other beer enthusiasts.
